Early American Literature Reading List
The College of Arts and Sciences seeks applications from qualified candidates for two full-time, tenure-track appointments beginning in summer 2016. The appointment is for Assistant Professors of English; specializations sought include Early American literature or Latina/o literature. The successful candidates will be expected to teach lower-division courses in Literature and Composition as well as upper-level and graduate courses in the area of specialization. The College seeks excellence in instruction, research, and service. The regular teaching load is 4/4. Summer teaching assignments may be available but are not guaranteed.

Founded in 1965, Early American Literature is the journal of the Division on American Literature to 1800 of the ModernLanguage Association. It is the only journal that focuses on the scholarship and criticism of American literature through the early national period. It typically includes six essays, an essay review or forum, and several book reviews.Early American literature in the Harris Collection begins in 1609, with the Paris publication of Marc Lescarbot's Les Muses de la Nouvelle France. This work printed a pageant, Theatre de Neptune en la Nouvelle-France that had been performed in Nova Scotia in 1606. Most of the other 17th century imprints in the Harris Collection were printed in London, and include plays by John Crowne, translations of Ovid and versions of the Psalms by George Sandys, and, notably, the 1650 London edition of Anne Bradstreet's The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung up in America.
