This course provides a broad, historical survey ofAmerican literature from the early colonial period to the Civil War. Rangingacross historical periods and literary genres—including early accounts ofcontact and discovery, narratives of captivity and slavery, poetry ofrevolution, essays on gender equality, and stories of industrialexploitation—this class examines how subjects such as colonialism, nationhood,religion, slavery, westward expansion, race, gender, and democracy continue toinfluence how Americans see themselves and their society.
